What is Jodo

Jodo is one of the  Koryu, or traditional martial arts, that grew out of the turbulent history of Japan. In Jodo a wooden staff of about 128mm in length and usually made of Japanese white oak is used to defend against an attacking swordsman.

History of Jodo

The origins of Jodo are shrouded in myths and legends. One such story describes a battle between Musashi Miyamoto, the famed swordsman, and Muso Gonnosuke. Miyamoto is said to have defeated Gonnosuke in a contest wherein Miyamoto used his favorite two sword technique while Gonnosuke used a  bo, a long wooden staff about six feet in length. Gonnosuke's life was spared leaving him to meditate on his defeat.
His meditation brought him a "divine insight" that prompted him, to develop a shorter staff and the techniques that came to be    Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo. Then, in a return match with Miyamoto, Gonnosuke was able to give the great swordsman his only defeat.
The new weapon that Gonnosuke brought to this match was shorter then the   bo but still longer by some six inches then the sword. Also, while the hard oak of the staff could snap a sword blade, the blade couldn't cut through the one inch oak   jo.
